Representation of land-surface processes in aeolian transport models

چکیده
Mathematical modelling provides an essential tool for understanding aeolian transport of dust and sand, its spatial and temporal dynamics, and its role in the earth system. As much of the crucial action takes place at or just above land surfaces, adequate representation of land-surface processes is essential. In this paper, we review progress in aeolian transport modelling during last two decades, with emphasis on the representation of several key land-surface processes: (1) saltation; (2) dust uplift; (3) the threshold for particle motion, including the effects of surface sheltering and cohesion; (4) turbulent diffusion near the ground; and (5) deposition of particles to the surface. These process models are then placed in the context of integrated models of aeolian transport, in which the conservation equation for atmospheric dust is solved over a large region or the globe. We identify and assess four challenges in large-scale aeolian transport modelling: (1) the fidelity of process representations, (2) upscaling point-scale process models in the presence of unresolved heterogeneity in space and time (where a new approach is suggested), (3) availability of spatial data on model inputs and boundary conditions, and (4) large-scale parameter estimation. Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION In the arid and semi-arid areas of Asia, dust storms occur frequently. Much progress has been made in the monitoring modeling and prediction of Asian dust storms. Dust emission is caused by wind erosion in the sensitive areas. Wind erosion is described as the transportation of soil particles by means of the wind. Soil Surface moisture is one of the most i...
متن کاملToward a more holistic perspective of soil erosion: Why aeolian research needs to explicitly consider fluvial processes and interactions
Soil erosion is driven by not only aeolian but also fluvial transport processes, yet these two types of processes are usually studied independently, thereby precluding effective assessment of overall erosion, potential interactions between the two drivers, and their relative sensitivities to projected changes in climate and land use. Here we provide a perspective that aeolian and fluvial transp...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment between them can lead to one of the systems or both of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...
متن کاملProcess-based Modeling of Coastal Dune Development
A model that predicts sediment transport due to wind action can be valuable addition to hydrodynamic models to describe the long-term interaction between land and water. This thesis presents the application of an aeolian transport model [Sauermann et al., 2001, Kroy et al., 2002] as a tool for the evolution of coastal nourishments and dunes. The model was originally developed to describe import...
متن کاملThe effect of roughness elements on wind erosion: The importance of surface shear stress distribution
Representation of surface roughness effects on aeolian sediment transport is a key source of uncertainty in wind erosion models. Drag partitioning schemes are used to account for roughness by scaling the soil entrainment threshold by the ratio of shear stress on roughness elements to that on the vegetated land surface. This approach does not explicitly account for the effects of roughness confi...
